Located in midtown Manhattan, The Museum of Modern Art was founded in 1929 to collect and display “Modern” art, focusing primarily on Europe and North America. Today its encyclopedic collection from around the world includes almost 200,000 paintings; sculptures; prints; drawings; photographs; objects, models, and drawings related to design and architecture; and a significant number of films and movie stills. Many iconic works from the 20th century may be found there, including Vincent van Gogh's “The Starry Night,” Claude Monet's “Water Lilies,” and Pablo Picasso's “Les Demoiselles d'Avignon,” as well as contemporary works by Andy Warhol, Elizabeth Murray, Cindy Sherman, and many others.
