Founded in 1904 in New York City, the Jewish Museum was the first institution of its kind in the United States, and currently the oldest in the world. Their holdings include nearly 30,000 objects reflecting global Jewish identity over more than 4,000 years—painting, sculpture, works on paper, photography, installations, media, archaeological artifacts, antiquities, and ceremonial objects. Highlights include works by Man Ray, Eva Hesse, Andy Warhol, Alfred Steiglitz, and Marc Chagall, as well as an 18th century Hanukkah menorah from Germany and a Torah Ark from 1899. Permanent and changing exhibits—and monograph shows of significant artists, for which they are known—are drawn from their collection and outside sources. All floors are accessible for people using mobility aids or who need to avoid stairs. All public restrooms include accessible facilities.
