The New-York Historical Society was established in 1804, making it New York City's first museum. Its current home is one of the last Beaux-Arts style buildings built in the country. Permanent and changing exhibits draw upon the Society's holdings to highlight certain historical themes. The Society's collection contains over 1.6 million works, including art by Thomas Cole, Rembrandt Peale, and Gilbert Stuart, and all 435 of John James Audubon's extant preparatory watercolors for “Birds of America.” Among the institution's holdings are sculptor Elie Nadelman's collection of American folk art; one of the world's largest collections of Tiffany glasswork; George Washington's camp bed from Valley Forge; a collection of US newspapers from the 1700s; and many other important historical objects and artifacts. A relatively recent addition is a space dedicated to an interactive children's history museum. A restaurant and museum shop are on the premises.
